Ring! Ring!

"Hello Janice. Please don't hang up. Please!" Jayce was startled and too curious to hang up. "This is Veedra. Please listen carefully. What I have to say will help both of us. As strange as it may seem, we need each other desperately right now!" Jayce listened on. "Get a pen because I don't have much time,” Vee said. Jayce obliged.

"I spoke with Public Defender, Marvin Hathoway. Write that name down. His number is 912-706-0918. You will need to call him. Janice, I need to get out no later than 5:00 p.m. today or the state will take all of the kids. They found out that the drug I administered to you was vitamin B-12, but by the time my hearing comes up the kids will be gone." She started to cry. "They're saying that the court will take...You need to get out of there now. Call your doctor or whatever you need to do. Attorney Hathoway has a waiver for my assault charge to be dropped, custody papers for Reeshia for you and Rick to sign, and a paper for you to have signed stating that you've completed treatment."

Jayce said, "I haven't finished treatment."

Vee continued, "I have contacted Dr. Xia Ying Yen. She owes me a favor. She has agreed to sign the court documents, if you agree to rehabilitation, and family counseling for all of us."

Jayce said with sarcasm, "So, you need me now, huh? What if I just get out and go home to take care of the kids?"

"Janice, please. Yes! Yes! I need you. My husband has threatened to harm our daughters. He's Charleton Copperhead, Sr., remember? Janice, he used to beat me and lock me up in rooms while I was pregnant. He beat me so bad that my whole face was swollen. I thought that I would lose my eye. It was swollen shut. It was red, yellow, purple and blue. It took three weeks for my eye to open. He made me lose my child. He's in a halfway house at the mental institution. I promise I will leave Rick alone. I will never try to harm you or your family again. I've had time to think. I need counseling. I'll sign the papers for Reeshia's guardianship before I leave jail. Just go home for our girls, please!” Vee cried.

Janice was not confused at all. She understood. She was trusting and anxious. She gave in for the kids.

"So, I need to see the public defender, the doctor, and then go back to take the signed papers to the public defender. Vee confirmed that Jayce was right. Jayce, with a little reluctance said, "My doctor and Rick are coming in now. I'm on my way."

The doctor said in a joking tone, "Just where are you on your way to, young lady?" Jayce did not crack her usual smile.

She asked, "Dr. Kelton, are you releasing me today?"

The doctor explained that he was indeed releasing her. Jayce wanted to know if he thought she was incompetent or in any way could be judged as an unfit mother.
